Valentina Kozlova Dance Conservatory of New York (VKDCNY) offers prestigious training in classical ballet technique of the Russian Vaganova method. All of the school’s teachers and coaches are highly experienced and trained in this technique and more. The student training begins at age nine and up with four levels of class placement. Along with the year-round class commitment, the students participate in performances and competitions nationally and internationally. The results of these performances and competitions continue to give the students of VKDCNY high recognition. The school is designed to offer the highest level of dance instruction in the Vaganova method to prepare the students for a professional career in dance.
Held at Sotogrande International School (SIS), the first VKDCNY Spain Summer Intensive offered two weeks of instruction in classical ballet of the Vaganova method, pointe work, variations, personal coaching, European contemporary dance, and character dance. Under the artistic direction of Valentina Kozlova (former Principal Dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet and New York City Ballet), the program was taught by educators Svetlana Ivanova (former Soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet Company), Sergei Soloviev (former Principal Dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet and current Master Teacher at Paris Conservatory of Dance) and Rita Quaglia (Master Teacher at the Paris Conservatory and International Guest Teacher and Choreographer in Contemporary).
Students attending, ages 11 to 19, came from Europe, the US and the Philippines. At the end of the two-week intensive, the young dancers delighted an enthusiastic audience with a performance created while in Sotogrande, showcasing what they had learned. On their day off, the students took a trip to Tarifa, Europe’s most Southern point, where the Mediterranean sea meets the Atlantic ocean.
With Sotogrande International School wholeheartedly supporting the Dance Intensive, the program was a great success and will return next year.
